Dr Ataur Rahman is a world leader in statistical hydrology and water conservation. He is currently serving as a Professor in Water Engineering in Western Sydney University, Australia. Western Sydney University is one of the top 500 universities (as per QS ranking) in the world, with over 40,000 students. Prof Rahman obtained his PhD in Hydrology in 1997 from Monash University in Australia (one of the top 100 universities in the world).
Prof Rahman received the highly prestigious ’The G. N. Alexander Medal’ from the Institution of Engineers Australia for his research on stochastic hydrology. He also won Western Sydney University’s Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Award in Postgraduate Research and Supervision in 2015 and in 2017. He has published over 400 research papers, reports and book chapters that include 93 ISI listed journal articles. He served as Project 5 Leader (Regional flood methods) in the new Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR) – the national guide/standard in Australia. He is the co-developer of the RFFE software, which is widely used in Australia for flood risk assessment in ungauged catchments.
Prof Rahman is in the editorial board of Journal of Hydrologic Engineering (published from USA), Water (published from Switzerland), and Australasian Journal of Water Resources. Prof Rahman has completed numerous high level consulting and peer review tasks with national and international companies including Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Gold Coast City Council, GHD, SKM, ASCO and COWI. He has received research and consulting grants over $1.5 million. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia and Member of American Geophysical Union, American Society of Civil Engineers, International Water Association and Australian Water Association. Prof Rahman is the Founder Chair of Global Circle for Scientific, Technological and Management Research (GCSTMR). He is also serving as Co-Chair of Water Education and Research Committee of Australian Water Association.
